MODOT lets contractor inspect work on I-64 overhaul

(St. Louis Public Radio) - State transportation officials say they are not performing construction inspections on the half-billion dollar Interstate 64 overhaul.

Instead, as the Post- Dispatch reports, MODOT is allowing contractors to inspect their own work.

State inspectors are responsible for quality control on most road construction jobs, but MODOT officials say they ceded oversight to Gateway Constructors because the project was too big for the state inspection staff.

However MODOT says state inspectors perform regular audits of Gateway's inspections, and the few problems they have found were generally related to paperwork.
