On his website, the mayor says he does not believe Mokwa did anything wrong. But he says unanswered questions about the use and sale of impounded cars are distracting the department from its mission.
Meanwhile, the state panel that oversees the police department will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m.
It's closed to the public, and a notice to media says only that the police board plans to discuss personnel matters.
The board initially cleared Mokwa of wrongdoing last week after an internal investigation.
But later, investigators said the chief was not entirely truthful with them.
At a news conference Tuesday, Mokwa said he was the victim of misinformation and innuendo.
