George Hincapie finishes Wednesday's stage
Schmatz now lives in Colorado. The crash happened about three miles into the stage.
The race continued, though, with George Hincapie emerging from a group of 12 riders with a late surge to win the second stage and take the race lead.
Hincapie rides for the Discovery Channel team and has 11 Tour de France finishes -- the most by any American.
Wednesday's stage took riders 125.6 miles from Clinton to Springfield. Hincapie made it in four hours, 35 minutes and 26 seconds.
Frank Pipp of Boulder, Colorado, was second, and Dominique Rollin of Canada was third in the same time as Hincapie.
Today's (Thursday) 18-mile third stage is an individual time trial in Branson.
The six-day, 562-mile race passes through 20 counties and about 50 cities and towns. It ends in St. Louis on Sunday.
