Romney Accuses Critic of Bigotry
(2007-05-10)
Mitt Romney, R-MA (Steve Carmody, Michigan Radio)
(Associated Press) -
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says remarks made by Al Sharpton about God and about Romney's Mormon faith could be construed as "bigoted."

On Monday, Sharpton said in a debate that "those of us who believe in God" will defeat Romney for the White House.

But he denies he was questioning the Mormon's own belief in God. Rather, the New York Democrat said he was contrasting himself with Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author he was debating at the time.

Still, Romney complained today that the remarks were "terribly misguided."

Sharpton is accusing the Romney campaign of trying to "fabricate a controversy."
