(St. Louis Public Radio) - The new baby elephant at the St. Louis Zoo has been temporarily separated from its mother.

Officials say the mother, Rani, is showing some signs of discomfort being around her calf that was born Sunday. They also say the behavior is not uncommon with first-time mothers.

The baby has nursed and taken a bottle, which would be an important alternative if needed. © Copyright 2012, St. Louis Public Radio
