Ex-councilor Bartlett says he's running for mayor
(2009-06-26)
(KOSU) - The son of a former Oklahoma governor and U.S. senator has announced his candidacy to become the mayor of Tulsa.
Dewey Bartlett Jr. is a 62-year-old oilman and former Tulsa city councilor, having served from 1990 to 1994. He unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 1992 and for a state Senate seat in 2004.
Bartlett calls himself a conservative businessman who is interested in growing jobs, not government. He is running as a Republican.
His late father, Dewey Bartlett, was Oklahoma's governor from 1967 to 1971 and as a U.S. senator from 1973 to 1979.
Republican Clay Clark, Republican-turned-Democrat Robert Gwin Jr. and former Republican state Sen. James Williamson have previously announced plans to run for mayor.
Incumbent Mayor Kathy Taylor says she will not seek re-election.
