OKLAHOMA – Offering significant awards and support to artists, the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s (OVAC) Art 365 exhibition challenges local artists to create new, innovative artwork. Five artists each receive $12,000 and one year of curatorial guidance in preparation for an exhibition. Art 365 will travel to the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa’s Hardesty Arts Center, 101 E. Archer St, Tulsa, May 23-August 9, 2014, with an opening reception on May 23, 6-9 pm.

Artists were selected from a statewide call for proposals by guest curator Raechell Smith, chief curator and founding director of the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute. Smith reviewed 60 proposals from artists around the state and visited 11 artists in their studios before making her final selections.

Exploring remote portions of our National Parks and wilderness areas, Bryan Cook (OKC) presents large scale photographs of these pristine locations, capturing places and moments that most will never experience with their own eyes. Motivated to explore the role of smell in our experience of places, Cathleen Faubert (Norman) collects and distills material from Oklahoma’s distinct eco-regions creating an imagined aromatic landscape. Eyakem Gulilat (Norman), an Ethiopian immigrant to Oklahoma, observed the abundant presence of churches in the state and grew curious about the racial, political and socioeconomic relationships within and around churches. His series of aerial photographs explores the role these church buildings play in their surrounding neighborhoods. Exploring her heritage as a third generation Ukrainian-American, Alexandra Knox (Norman) traveled to the Ukraine to meet family members, conduct research, and gather artifacts for a new installation investigating her cultural identity. Spurred by her own musings about what life would have been like had she been a mother, Romy Owens (OKC) is creating a room-sized knitted installation where the audience may reflect on their own life decisions.

“The Art 365 exhibition is the kind of opportunity that can transform the artists’ careers,” said Julia Kirt, executive director of OVAC. “We see rapid advancements in the Art 365 artists’ work and professionalism as OVAC provides a year of financial, intellectual, and logistical support.”

Art 365 is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Oklahoma Arts Council, George Kaiser Family Foundation, LEVEL Urban Apartments, NBC Bank, Ad Astra Foundation and Allied Arts. For more information about Art 365, please visit www.Art365.org or call 405-879-2400.
