Tulsa Opera's flagship education program, Tulsa Youth Opera, presents its 2014 mainstage production, the Oklahoma premiere of the delightful opera Little Nemo in Slumberland. Described as a magic opera in two acts, Little Nemo in Slumberland was written by acclaimed American composer Daron Hagen, with a libretto by American poet and literacy critic J.D. McClatchy.
The opera, based on Winsor McCay's early 20th-century comic strip Little Nemo, follows the adventures of a little boy as he fights to save Slumberland from the evil Emperor Sol, who seeks a world of eternal sunshine. During his journey through the world of dreams, Nemo encounters a number of fantastical characters, including a crystal enchantress, menacing giants, the impish Flip, the doddering Dr. Phil, and King Morpheus and his lovely daughter, the Princess.
The production features 42 members of Tulsa Youth Opera, members of the Tulsa Opera Studio Artist Program, and a student orchestra composed of children from throughout the Tulsa area. Little Nemo in Slumberland is directed by Stanley M. Garner and conducted by Aaron Beck.
