February 18, 7:00PM-8:15PM
JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday February 18, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin). Dr. Benjamin Boone, educator, theorist, composer, scholar, jazz saxophonist and Professor of Music at California State University, Fresno will give a presentation titled “Whether you know it or Not, YOU Are a Jazz Improviser: Insights from speech research." Most non-playing jazz fans are in awe of jazz players' ability to spontaneously improvise, not realizing that they themselves improvise every time they speak. In this interactive, fun and fast-paced presentation, Dr. Boone will share insights gleaned from his analysis of speech from a musical perspective, which is mentioned in the world's leading encyclopedia of music, Grove's, and published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. You will learn how Jelly Roll Morton and Alan Lomax's speech compares with that of Madonna and Barbara Walters, ways music mirrors speech, ways speech serves as a nonverbal channel of communication, how to gauge someone's level of agreement with you, how pitch can indicate social hierarchy, why "blue notes" evolved from speech and why the rhythm and pitch with which you speak while having a romantic meal with a date might dictate the outcome of the evening
