Second Sunday Cinema presents PROMISED LAND Sunday, March 10th, at 12:00 noon at the Fox Theatre in Montrose (27 S. Cascade). Director Gus Van Sant's powerful American drama follows an oil company executive (Matt Damon) and his sales partner (Francis McDormand) who attempt to secure natural gas drilling rights from citizens of economically depressed town. However, what should have been an easy corporate sell becomes complicated when a local schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) and a grassroots community activist (John Krasinski) confront the corporate team. The movie, co-written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski, has shone a spotlight on the continued debate surrounding hydraulic fracking – an environmentally controversial method of extracting natural gas from the ground that has prompted energy companies to buy drilling rights in rural towns such as the one at the heart of the movie. Krasinski explained, “Matt and I wanted to write a story about American identity. In all of today’s political and economic rhetoric, I feel people often lose sight of the deeper, core principles of what defines us as a country. We knew we needed to find a contemporary issue that would serve as the backdrop to the story but, more importantly, allow us to fully explore this idea.” Focus Features' Jeb Brody added, “Matt and John’s script is rich in Frank Capra-esque qualities, blending humor and heart while exploring the power of community in this day and age. An actor’s director like Gus brings forth all the emotions in the story, which is a true passion project for everyone." Rated R for language. 106 minutes. Tickets are $6.50.
