Join the World Affairs Council and Vital Voices Northwest Council on the fourth floor of the World Trade Center as we welcome Priti Patkar, Founder and Director of Prerana Anti-Trafficking and 2014 Human Rights Honoree, Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards
Ms. Patkar is a social worker who pioneered night shelters for the at-risk children of prostituted women in India. She has led efforts for over 20 years to end inter-generational human trafficking as the first female social worker working in the middle of India’s largest red light district. In 1986, far before many of the well-known anti-trafficking advocates had begun their work, Priti was a true pioneer. She witnessed prostitutes bringing their children with them to work, which often meant these children ended up in the same line of work. Priti was desperate to create a solution to end this chain. So she set up a night shelter in the red light district and told the mothers that they could simply drop off their children and they would be cared for by Priti instead of going to brothels thus eliminating a key step that is crucial to the cycle of forced prostitution.
Today, her non-profit organization Prerana works in Mumbai’s red light district to end the intergenerational trafficking of children of prostituted women, restore the dignity of the victims of the sex trade, and impact national, regional and global polices of human trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation. Her organization was one of the first to provide comprehensive care for trafficked women and children affected by HIV, which was notable because at the time these victims were often shunned by medical professionals and the community at large. Prerana’s flagship programs were incorporated by the Indian government’s national program against child trafficking, which issued its first national Plan of Action against child trafficking in 1998.
She was appointed by central and state governments to serve in monitoring and consultative bodies dealing with child sexual exploitation and trafficking. She currently sits on the Supreme Court of India’s special panel to assist the court in addressing issues of sex worker rehabilitation and the prevention of trafficking.
Ms. Patkar participated in the 2013 Global Freedom Exchange sponsored by Hilton Worldwide. Priti stood out in this program among her participant peers for her inquisitiveness and evident interest in maximizing her learning from this exchange. She was nominated by Judge Swati Chauhan, who is a judge in a specialized anti-trafficking court in Mumbai and a delegate of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women (Avon/Vital Voices Partnership). Additionally, Priti is well-connected to the Vital Voices network of leaders in India and has collaborative relationships with Sunitha Krishnan and the Kant brothers.
Ms. Patkar was invited to speak before the UN Congress in Vienna as a model of Best Practices on the issue of child sex trafficking in April 2000 and before the World Congress on HIV/AIDS in Yokohama in 1996. She is also the recipient of the 2013 CNN IBN Real Heroes Award.
Join us as we hear more about her incredible work and dedication to ending human trafficking in India.
