The World Affairs Council presents travel TV host and author Rick Steves as the keynote speaker for their15th annual essay contest award ceremony. After spending 4 months a year for the last 32 years living out of a suitcase, Steves will reflect on the value of thoughtful travel. How can travel inspire creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems? Is travel fundamentally an act of citizen diplomacy? How can Americans promote peace through their travel choices? Sharing lessons learned from Iran to El Salvador and from India to Denmark, Steves will share with us why spending all that time and money away from home has broadened his perspective, enriched his life, and made it clear to him that “fear is for people who don’t get out very much.” Join us for this special evening as we walk off the beaten path in the footsteps of Rick Steves.
Finally we will end the evening saluting nine Washington State students in grades 3 through 12 for their award-winning essays. They were challenged with the following: If you were traveling like Rick Steves with the goal of making connections and understanding cultures, where would you go and why? What would you hope to learn? How would traveling to this place and meeting its residents broaden your perspectives – and why is this important?
NOTE: This registration is for the public program (7-8:30 PM) only. If you wish to register for the entire teacher workshop which includes the public program, light buffet, resource packet, and 3 clock hours (5:30-8:30 PM) go to the events calendar and click on Travel as an Educational Act.
