Reno Company to Build Revolutionary New Motor
RENO, NV
(KUNR) -
The Reno based Motiv Engines corporation, has signed a license agreement to manufacture an engine that is six times smaller and up to 32% more fuel efficient than traditional engines of the same power. The Caterpillar corporation, known for its bulldozers and other heavy equipment, developed the revolutionary technology and donated the patents to Kansas State University which controls the intellectual property rights. Motiv CEO Ed O'Malley says the cci motor is like other internal combustion engines with a few differences.
O'Malley: It has a normal combustion chamber that uses two pistons, but the thing that's different, it has a separate piston that precompresses the air. And then a third piston that allows further expansion and further extraction out of the exhaust.
The motor is being designed to run on traditional fuels like gasoline and diesel but will also be able to burn renewable fuels like biodiesel and algae based ethanol. O'Malley believes the motor will be popular in boats, aircraft, trucks and automobiles.
O'Malley: Well, if you consider the fact that it has a benefit almost anywhere you can use an internal combustion motor, the potential for it is really quite large.
The goal is to have a production model for sale within 5 years. Motiv Engines has hired John Clarke as Chief Technology Advisor. Mr. Clarke invented the CCI engine and is former Senior Engine Research Engineer at Caterpillar.
