Wild Horse Bill Dissent
proposal to euthanize wild horses and is asking a federal agency to
delay a decision on the animals' fate.
Representative Nick Rahall, a West Virginia Democrat and
chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, is urging the
U.S. Bureau of Land Management to hold off until a report is
released in September on how the agency has managed wild horses.
Bureau officials say they face tough choices because wild horses
have overpopulated public lands in the West and the agency can't
afford to care for all the animals that have been rounded up. Other
options include stepping up birth control.
There are an estimated 33,000 wild horses in 10 Western states.
About half are in Nevada.
