One of Albuquerque’s finest tenor saxophonists, Kanoa Kaluhiwa has performed locally, nationally and internationally with a broad array of musicians, including Ottmar Liebert, Sparx, and others. Equally at home with straight ahead, modern and African jazz styles (he also plays mbira, djembe and piano), Kaluhiwa also teaches the Advanced Jazz classes for Youth and Adults at Outpost. Tonight’s performance will focus on some obscure compositions by Chick Corea, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, George Cables, and Branford Marsalis as well as a possible impromptu piece by the quartet. Kaluhiwa is joined by John Rangel, piano; Asher Barreras, bass; and Diego Arencon, drums.
The Alpha Cats are guitarists Lewis Winn and George Langston; bassist Susan Holmes; and drummer John Bartlit. Featuring an eclectic blend of jazz, blues, western swing, and bossa nova styles “delivered with a frisky flair,” much of their music is arranged with their trademark “twin guitar” treatment. A Santa Fe staple, The Cats also play regularly around Albuquerque at Scalo, St. Clair Winery and other venues. For this concert they’ll be performing primarily original compositions and a choice standard or two.
