Guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson completed her jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School and has been active in New York since 2002. Critics have called her “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now” (Lars Gotrich, NPR.org) and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). In addition to her longstanding trio, and her quintet with whom she performs tonight, Halvorson also co-leads a chamber-jazz duo with violist Jessica Pavone, the avant-rock band, People, and the collective ensembles Thumbscrew, Reverse Blue, and Secret Keeper. She is also an active member of bands led by Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Myra Melford, and Tom Rainey, among many others. The Mary Halvorson Quintet’s recent recording, Bending Bridges was “one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated albums…and confirms Halvorson as an artist whose originality as a guitarist is no fiercer than her originality as a writer. Simply put, no one is making music like this.” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes) In addition to Mary Halvorson on guitar, the Mary Halvoroson Quintet features four long-time collaborators: Jonathan Finlayson, trumpet; Jon Irabagon, alto saxophone; John Hébert, bass; & Ches Smith, drums. This concert is supported by Presenting Jazz, a program of Chamber Music America funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
