New Mexico’s own jazz guitar luminary, Michael Anthony, pays tribute in this concert, to the revered guitarist Johnny Smith, who passed away in June 2013 at the age of 90, and who, among other things, was responsible for writing the surf guitar anthem “Walk, Don’t Run.” A resident of New Mexico since 1980, Michael Anthony spent many years working in L.A. Recording Studios. He accompanied Miles Davis at the Monterey Jazz Festival and has recorded and performed with many esteemed jazz and popular artists including Gil Evans, Quincy Jones, Tony Bennett, The Beach Boys, Diana Ross, and more. Anthony has released nine CDs, published two Jazz Guitar Instruction books, and has taught Jazz Guitar Studies at UNM since 1997, as well as contributing to the Manzano High School guitar program for the past 15 years. Joining him for this concert will be Glenn Kostur, saxophones and flute; Stu MacAskie, piano/keyboards; Michael Olivola, bass; and Cal Haines, drums.
