Colorado Immigrants Call for National Reforms
Some protesters marching along Colfax Avenue held signs bashing the new Arizona immigration law. Others like Marizon Guadrama of Denver targeted their frustrations directly at the president.
"I'm holding a sign that says 'Obama keep a promise,'" Guadrama says, "He had promised to bring a reform program within the first year he was president, and he has not kept that promise for us."
Non-border states like Colorado and Nevada have been a flash point in the immigration reform debate which has ratcheted up lately after the passage of the Arizona bill.
Activists here are hoping to keep the pressure on federal lawmakers and the president. Turnout for today's rally was smaller than predicted, but police were on hand en masse. More than two dozen Denver P.D. and Homeland Security officers surrounded the federal courthouse where the march ended.
