Water Pipeline Draws Letters of Support
(2010-01-25)
(KUNC) - Representatives of some of the municipalities and irrigation districts interested in bringing in water from Wyoming to Colorado say they need more water regardless of where it comes from.

Fort Collins resident Aaron Million wants to pipe water from the Green River in southwestern Wyoming to Colorado's Front Range. Despite vocal opposition, several water districts in Colorado have written letters of support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is overseeing an environmental study. Mike DiTullio is general manager for the Fort Collins Loveland Water District.

"We would like to see a project like that work if it could bring water into it," he says. "We don't know what the costs are. We're just interested in new water that would be available to northern Colorado."

DiTullio says the letter supports a new source of water, but it doesn't necessarily have to come from the pipeline project. Opponents of the plan argue that it's too risky. And the Save the Poudre Coalition says conservation, land-use planning and working with farmers could solve problems for the Fort Collins Loveland Water District. Overall 17 local water entities in Colorado and Wyoming have expressed an interest in the pipeline.
