Many First-Year College Students Need Remedial Help, says New CCHE Study
(2010-02-09)
(KUNC) - An annual report by the Colorado Commission for Higher Education shows one in every three Colorado students entering college needs remedial help in at least one core subject. Just over half of high school graduates - about 53 percent - enrolled in two year-colleges needed remedial help in reading, math or writing in the fall of 2008. And nearly 20 percent of students entering four-year colleges needed help in at least one of those core subjects. John Karakoulakis is with the Department of Higher Education. He says there is some good news in the report

"The remediation rate has kind of leveled out for the past couple of years...about 30 percent of students were assigned to remediation. The good news is it's not increasing, but it's not going down."

The report comes as the state is embarking on education reforms, spurred by the Colorado Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K) legislation. Karakoulakis says he hopes the Commission's report will serve as both a progress report and an information resource for continuing the effort to ensure students graduating from Colorado high schools are ready for college or the workplace.
