Refugees 'Unsettling the West'
(2009-11-06)
(KUNC) - The makeup of many western farming towns is changing as a result of immigration and the settling of refugees from far corners of the world. In some places this has led to cultural clashes. Perhaps the most high profile in the region is in Colorado, where Somali workers at a Greeley meatpacking plant were at the center of a dispute over prayer breaks during last year's Muslim holy month, Ramadan. This "unsettling of the West" is chronicled in the latest High Country News. But the magazine's assistant editor Marty Durlin tells KUNC's Kirk Siegler that the region has a lot to learn from the situation in Greeley. © Copyright 2012, KUNC
