Dr. John Behrendt first went to Antarctica to participate as a graduate student in the International Geophysical Year where he spent a year and a half in the Filchner Ice Shelf area. He has continued his Antarctic geophysical-glaciological research to the present on 12 additional expeditions in six successive decades. His slide presentation will cover the historic progression from the heroic to the scientific age of Antarctic activities, concentrating on the measurement of the thickness of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and subglacial geology.
