KUMD Album Reviews: Grime
Visions is the third full-length release from Montreal-based musician Claire Boucher under the name Grimes. While her 2010 releases (Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, both re-released in 2011) generated heaps of hype, Visions has catapulted Grimes to the forefront of the independent music circuit via the British label and indie giant 4AD.
Visions finds Grimes fully embracing every loop and effect pedal at her disposal, resulting in a distinctly "21st century bedroom" sound. Grimes carefully embodies the producer/pop-star persona, producing tight melodic hooks and crafty melodies which end up sounding like the happy confluence of Aphex Twin and a lo-fi Lady Gaga. Album highlights include the piano arpeggios peppered throughout "Genesis", the rhythmic robot vocals of "Eight", and the playful, chromatic melody and orchestra hits toward the end of "Oblivion".
