Homelessness in Utah - Part 2: From the Streets to an Apartment
(2008-10-14)
Ed Snoddy, a homeless outreach worker with Volunteers of America. Jenny Brundin
(kuer) - Tomorrow, homeless advocates gather for the 5th annual Homeless Summit. They'll share strategies and brainstorm on a new approach they've been working on since 2005. It's called Housing First. The idea is to house the homeless first - then work on issues of addiction, mental illness and job training. So far, two hundred and twenty-six chronically homeless Utahns have moved into apartments. By 2010, the goal is to have more than 500 in permanent, supported housing - roughly a quarter of Utah's long-term homeless. But homelessness is a complex problem - and going from the streets to a studio apartment isn't always easy. KUER's Jenny Brundin brings us the second in a series. © Copyright 2012, kuer
