In 1868 stories of a strange creature in Utah's Bear Lake were blazing throughout the territory. Joseph Rich, the son of a prominent Mormon leader, wrote in the Deseret News: "the Indians say there is a monster animal which lives in the lake. They represent it as being of the serpent kind, but having legs about 18 inches long." Even after Rich admitted it was all a publicity stunt, the story couldn't be broken lose.
