WOMAN CHARGED IN POLYGAMY SCAM
(2006-07-04)
(wgvu) - A Macomb County judge has refused to
dismiss polygamy charges against a woman who authorities say stole
tens of thousands of dollars from men she married.
A lawyer for Kyle McConnell had argued that the 46-year-old
woman can't be charged with polygamy in a September marriage in
Roseville because her previous marriage was illegal.
No one disputes that McConnell married a Saint Clair County man
before marrying Doug Rice in September. But her lawyer says the
Saint Clair marriage was invalid because she was already married to
a third man.
McConnell is serving a sentence of 22 months to 10 years for
stealing 14-thousand dollars and attempted uttering and publishing.
If convicted of polygamy, she could face up to four years in
prison.
