Scott Simon's Novel "Pretty Birds"

AUSTIN, TX (KUT) - Many authors at the Texas Book Festival have written stories about Texas. But others, such as NPR's Scott Simon, bring stories from different parts of the world. His is set in 1993 in Sarajevo. Once touted as a cultural center of Eastern Europe, the city was in ruins, ravaged by the bloody civil war that had torn apart the former Yugoslavia. A war that included atrocities on all sides - from the murder, torture and rape of civilians to outright ethnic cleansing. Scott Simon reported on the Balkan war from Sarajevo.
