March 21 RadioActive! Tapestry Against Polygamy
(2005-03-23)
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
(krcl) -
In the state of Utah polygamy is a contentious issue. As a crime, it goes largely unprosecuted. As a practice it is seen as both a civil rights battle and a civil rights catastrophe. Practioners of polygamy feel that the custom is a freedom of religion issue with protections under the first amendment. Many progressives feel that any behavior between consenting adults should be embraced and that the state should not attempt to legislate what a marriage should look like. However, opponents of polygamy maintain that the practice is exploitative, sex abuse and detrimental to children. Vicky Prunty with Tapestry Against Polygamy and author of God's Brothel,Andrea Moore Emmitt, discussed the issues surrounding polygamy and their work combating this Utah tradition.
