Marriage Amendment Takes Center Stage
(2004-07-12)
(WCPN) - In the U.S. Senate this week, lawmakers will likely vote on a bill that would amend the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. The issue has polarized people all over the country and right here in Ohio. Depending who you talk to, the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment is either a necessary effort to preserve marriage in this country, or an ugly example of prejudice. In Cleveland, members of the Lesbian and Gay Community Center have been hard at work since the middle of last month, urging gay and lesbian Clevelanders to contact Senators George Voinovich and Mike Dewine and tell them to oppose the amendment. But they've been no more active than local Christian churches and organizations, that have been just as busy telling their constituencies to contact the senators in support of the Amendment.
It is not likely that backers of the Federal Marriage Amendment have the 2/3 majority they need to pass it, but activists on both sides say the vote will be closely watched when it happens later this week.
