Bill Tightens Parental Consent of Abortion
(2003-06-25)
(Michigan Public Radio Network) - State House lawmakers have voted to make it tougher for girls to get abortions without a parent's consent. The legislation would require judges to consider a list of criteria before waiving the parental consent requirement for girls less than 18 years old. Those standards would include a minor's sexual history, school performance, and maturity. Opponents say judges already consider girls' competence and their family situations before granting waivers. They say the legislation is only designed to provide cover for judges with a moral opposition to abortion who want to deny waivers. © Copyright 2010, Michigan Public Radio Network
