Team Everest Tells Their Story
(2003-04-18)
(KUT) - A group of local mountain climbers know as Team Everest gathered Thursday to share their story of scaling Mt Everest. What makes their ascent so unique is that all of the climbers have some kind of disability. The expedition team included amputees, paraplegics and quadriplegics. The team made history as the first cross-disability expedition to reach base camp; 17,500 feet above sea level.

Team member Barry Muth says reaching base camp is just the beginning. "Now that we're here we can go beyond," he said. "You know try and figure out maybe if there is a way to take paraplegics or quadriplegics beyond base camp and maybe to the summit."

There is still one member of Team Everest working his way towards the summit. Expedition leader Gary Guller and a small summit team hope to reach the top of Everest in the next couple of weeks. If successful, Guller will be the first one armed mountain climber to reach the summit Mt Everest.
