Professor: New Nuclear Plants Too Expensive
Peter Bradford is an adjunct law professor at the University of Vermont. He says nuclear plants are too expensive create toxic waste and won't create jobs.
Bradford told Lansing lawmakers the industry can't get private financing to build the plants estimated to cost 10 to 12 billion dollars.
"They can't be sure they'll ever sell the kilowatt hours that need to be sold to make a profit, and as a result they'll want federally guaranteed loans," Bradford says. "So if the plants never produce, it's the taxpayers that pay back the lenders.
Bradford says the focus should be on energy efficiency. He also says wind energy shows great potential.
