Oklahoma Abortion Law Challenged
(2001-06-14)
(KOSU) - Opponents of Oklahoma's new parental notificationlaw say it could interfere with a young woman's legal right to havean abortion. Nova Health Systems is challenging the law saying it's vague andoverreaching. Nova is the parent company of Reproductive Servicesand Adoption Affiliates of Tulsa. The lawsuit seeks to enjoin the state from enforcing the lawthat requires minors to notify their parents or get their parentsconsent before they get an abortion. A hearing was held before a federal judge Wednesday in Tulsa. Thejudge took the case under advisement and didn't say when he willhand down a ruling. State Representative John Sullivan of Tulsa was the law'sprincipal author. Sullivan says if he's advised the language of the measure needsto be tightened, he would ask that it be modified at this summer'sspecial legislative session.
