House passes merit pay plan for public school teachers
(2008-03-13)
(KOSU) - A performance pay plan for Oklahoma
teachers that is opposed by the state's largest teacher organization has been narrowly approved by the Oklahoma House.
The House voted 51-46 on the proposal late Wednesday night and sent it to the Senate for consideration.
The measure by Rep. Lance Cargill, R-Harrah, would create a performance pay pilot program for up to 25 schools. The proposal was among Cargill's priorities as speaker before he stepped down from the post last month.
Cargill said average pay is not good enough for Oklahoma's best teachers. But the Oklahoma Education Association says teacher pay should be raised to the regional average before merit pay plans are
considered.
Gov. Brad Henry wants to give teachers pay increases averaging $1,200 to reach the regional average.
