(2007-07-14)
(NIKUMORORO)
(wbaa) -
A new expedition is underway to find the remains of a former Purdue faculty member and aviation pioneer. Amelia Earhart disappeared 70 years ago this month.
The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery is sending a team to the south Pacific island of Nikumororo, which is near Fiji.
Project member Pat Thrasher says her group believes Earhart safely crash-landed her plane there.
The expedition will search for human remains of the famous pilot. They will arrive in the South Pacific tomorrow morning.
Earhart lost radio contact with her colleagues July 2nd, 1937.
She and her navigator were attempting to take the longest flight in history, circling the globe. © Copyright 2012, wbaa
