Lincoln meets with Obama on health care proposals
Lincoln met with Obama for about 30 minutes at the White House to discuss proposals to overhaul the nation's health care system. Lincoln has said she opposes a public insurance option, but said Tuesday she's still undecided on a proposal from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that would allow states to choose whether to participate in such a program.
"I've certainly been disappointed that the focus of health insurance reform has shifted to this whole idea of a public option," Lincoln told reporters during a conference call after the meeting. "I thought the key for us was to look for as many options as we can for the public and creating an environment where there's greater choice and greater competition. But when it shifts to the formation of a new government-run, government-operated health insurance plan, I've got great concerns."
Lincoln said she also hasn't decided how to vote on a procedural measure that could move Reid's proposal to the Senate floor for a vote. Lincoln had voted for a health proposal before the Senate Finance Committee that did not include a public option.
She is viewed as one of several moderate Democrats whose support is crucial for the health care proposal. She's seeking a third term next year, and seven Republicans have announced they're seeking the GOP nomination to challenge her.
The Democratic incumbent faces scrutiny from Republicans and liberal groups on health care reform. The liberal group MoveOn.org announced Tuesday it was launching radio ads and a direct mail campaign urging Lincoln to support a public option.
Lincoln dismissed the criticism she's faced over health care.
"The two extremes are both of the groups that are really, unfortunately, not working towards getting something done," she said. "They're just drawing lines in the sand."
