Lia Cook and Mark Newport
Lia Cook and Mark Newport Mark Newport's Naftaman, 2008
by Brad Cushman There is a seductive tactile quality to surfaces of Lia Cook's woven tapestries. She uses the photos of her childhood to investigate small, intimate details of the body or to capture a fleeting human expression.

Lia Cook uses a computerized loom to weave images. The digital pixels become interlaced threads creating both cloth and image at the same time.

Mark Newport's hand knitted costumes are inspired by comic book superheroes. His knitted muscleman costumes hang sagging on the wall. Batman in black and gray is familiar but Newport plays, questioning, "What is a superhero?."

Sweaterman explores the different textures and patterns of knitting in purple and black and Naftaman resembles a multicolor pattern reminiscent of Mexican blankets.

Lia Cook and Mark Newport are featured in Form Follows Function or Does It? on display in Gallery I at UALR through December 10.
