Autumn colors motivated Imogene Ragon to paint watercolors and Masaki Kitamori to photograph Arkansas's natural surroundings.

In the book Landscape and Memory, Simon Shama recalls how Albert Bierstadt's paintings captured Yosemite before tourist parking lots and the bears discovered the delicacies of a fast food diet.
He states:
"It is difficult to think of a single such natural system that has not, for better or worse, been substantially modified by human culture."
