If you've ever wanted to name a geographical location, like a hill or a stream, you might be interested to know that there are several rules. The US Board on Geographic Names would like your name to have a specific tie to the place in question. Or it can be famous, like McKinley. You can't name something that's been named before, and many of these places are documented. They are written in The Dictionary of Alaska Place Names, a book that's been called the single most important reference book in the state. It was written in the 1960s by Don Orth, who is in Fairbanks this week and joined KUAC's Sarah Neal in our studio.
