The El Paso Museum of Art announces Artists on Art with Frol Boundin.
Frol Boundin (Russian 1974 - ) From “Lost Monuments”: Tjentiste – 1971, 2012, Mixed media print
Artists on Art provides local artists an opportunity to exhibit one work of art in any media accompanied by a 30 minute discussion on their work and its relation to the Museum’s permanent collection. There are four exhibits per year and the work is exhibited for a three-month period.
Frol Boundin was born in 1974 in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Russia and received early artistic training in the traditions of social realism from his grandfather the painter Victor Boundin, as well as at the Leningrad School of General Arts. He moved to the United States in 1990 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000. For the next ten years Boundin lived and worked in Chicago, focusing on large-scale abstract paintings and prints, as well as collaborative projects with local arts organizations. In 2010 Boundin moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in 2013 received his Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from the University of New Mexico. Recent exhibitions include Global Matrix III, the Atlanta Print Biennale, the Boston Printmakers Biennale, and most recently, his solo exhibition at Albuquerque’s Society for Contemporary Art.
Boundin’s work explores the symbols of a complex relationship between humanity and its habitat. Drawing on feelings of nostalgia and despair, and using images of the remnants of once idyllic settings Boundin creates emotionally charged, deeply layered compositions that speak to the temporality of human aspirations.
Formally, Boundin explores the technical possibilities of printmaking by creating complex textures and relationships between color and form. In moving away from direct representation Boundin aims to show the conflict inherent in man’s desire to control and change nature and his need to survive, as well as to present the possibility of seeing our past as a source for change.
