The El Paso County Attorney’s Office, along with Judge Yahara L. Gutierrez of the 65th Judicial District Court, the Juvenile Probation Department, the University of Texas at El Paso Law School Preparation Institute, the El Paso Children’s Hospital, and Cenpatico will be co-sponsoring this year’s Annual El Paso County Child Welfare Law Conference. The conference provides an opportunity for local lawyers, medical professionals, educators, social workers, and interested citizens to learn more about medical issues involved in child abuse and neglect cases. In 2011, child protection agencies throughout the country received 3.4 million referrals for the abuse and neglect of over 6.2 million children. From September 2012 to August of 2013, in El Paso, Texas, Child Protective Services investigated over 4,300 cases of child abuse and neglect. Of those cases that were investigated, over 200 cases were filed with the Court. Chicago Pediatrician, Dr. Ira Chasnoff, is this year’s keynote speaker and will be addressing the topic of the long-term effects of drugs and alcohol during pregnancy. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn from experts on a wide variety of topics including the effects of domestic violence on small children, how to talk to abused children, mental health disorders of abused children, ethics in cases involving Child Protective Services, and an attorney panel that will field questions from the audience. Participants will be eligible to receive 7 credit-hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE), including 1 credit-hour of Ethics and 7 credit-hours of Continuing Education Units (CEU). El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal said the purpose of the conference is to provide valuable, relevant information to local attorneys, partners, and the community on the topic of child abuse and neglect.
