Local Farmer's Markets get in gear

(ksut) - LORENA RICHARDS: THREE WOMEN, KIM SELF, SARA WICKFIELD AND LAUNA JOE WERE TIRED OF DRIVING TO DURANGO TO GET FRESH PRODUCE AND THEY KNEW PLENTY OF NEIGHBORS WHO JUST NEEDED A LOCAL VENUE. ORGANIZER KIM SELF PUT A CALL OUT TO THE COMMUNITY

KIM SELF: WE'RE HOPING FOR AS MANY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SELL LOCAL THINGS. LOCAL TOMATOES AND VEGETABLES AND BROCOLLI AND LETTUCE AND SPINACH. ANY KIND OF ANIMAL PRODUCTS, IF YOU HAVE MILK OR CHEESE, EGGS, MAKE GOAT MILK, GOAT CHEESE. I KNOW LA BOCA HAS SOME SAUSAGE FRESH MEAT THEY'LL BE SELLING THAT THERE. HOPEFULLY WE'LL HAVE SOME FRUIT AT THE END FROM A LITTLE BIT FURTHER AWAY. I DON'T KNOW IF PAGOSA HAS A FEW THINGS, WE DON'T HAVE DEFINITES YET.

LORENA RICHARDS: KIM HAS FIVE VENDORS SIGNED UP SO FAR, AND THEY'LL KICK THINGS OFF AT THE FIRST IGNACIO FARMERS MARKET AT SHASHONE PARK THIS AFTERNOON.

KIM SELF: WELL, I DON'T PERSONALLY HAVE ANYTHING TO SELL AT THE MARKET BUT I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS WHO ARE GROWING STUFF. HEARTWOOD HAS A FARM. LA BOCA HAS A FARM. WE HAVE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE FROM DURANGO WHO WILL BE COMING LATER IN THE SUMMER TO DO EDUCATION ON HOW TO GROW A GARDEN FOR LOCAL PEOPLE AND RIGHT NOW WE JUST WANT TO HAVE A BIG INVITATION TO THE COMMUNITY TO COME OUT AND SELL; THIS IS THE CREATION RIGHT NOW.

LORENA RICHARDS: THE IGNACIO FARMERS MARKET WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MID-SEPTEMBER EVERY THURSDAY FROM 4 P.M TO DARK AT SHASHONE PARK. KIM SAYS THEY'RE STILL LOOKING FOR LOCAL VENDORS, CRAFTERS AND MUSICIANS AND, FOR VENDORS, THERE'S JUST A FIVE DOLLAR FEE.

TODD ANDERSON: I'M TODD ANDERSON AND I'M A FARMER THAT GROWS FOR THE BAYFIELD FARMERS MARKET.

LORENA RICHARDS: TODD ANDERSON IS A FARMER IN BAYFIELD WHO'LL BE SELLING HIS PRODUCE AT BOTH THE IGNACIO FARMERS MARKET AND THE BAYFIELD FARMER'S MARKET, WHICH KICKS OFF NEXT SATURDAY, JULY 11, FROM 8:30 TO NOON AT ROADSIDE PARK.

TODD ANERSON: I GROW 40 DIFFERENT VEGETABLE AND HERBS. I'LL BRING SOME FLOWERS I'LL SELL WILD FLOWER SEEDS. EVERY YEAR I'M GROWING NEW STUFF, I'VE NEVER HAD ARUGULA BEFORE THIS YEAR AND IT'S DOING REALLY WELL. EVERYTHIGN FROM POTOTATOS, GARLIC, PEAS, TOMATOES, I GET LOST I GOT SO MUCH STUFF.

LORENA RICHARDS: TODD SAYS THAT WHILE THE NUMBERS ARE GROWING, IT'S STILL JUST A SMALL PERCANTAGE OF THE POPULATION THAT'S TAKING ADVANTAGE OF LOCAL FOOD. TODD ANDERSON: WAL MART MAKES MORE IN TWO MINUTES THAN WE MAKE ALL SUMMER AT THE FARMERS MARKET .I LITERALLY HARVEST THE NIGHT BEFORE I TAKE IT TO THE MARKET SO IT'S ONE-DAY OLD PRODUCE, WHICH YOU DO NOT GET IN THE GROCERYSTORE.
