HOST LEAD: Results and suggestions stemming from a May 8th bicycle summit in Durango were presented to LaPlata County Commissioners and a few members from Durango city staff.

KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner reports.

SARAH: A full-time bicycle and pedestrian coordinator was the number one suggestion that was made by those who attended the Durango Bike Summit.
Janine Justice with the Bicycle Friendly Durango Task Force explains to county commissioners how this position could work.
JANINE JUSTICE: WE NEED SOMEBODY AT THE CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENT LEVEL TO ACTUALLY AGAIN, MAKE THESE THINGS STICK, MAKE IT LAW. SO YOU REALLY NEED A COORDINATOR. AND THIS IS JUST WHAT MOST OF THEM, THEY CALL THEM A BIKE/PED COORDINATOR, COULD BE A MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR. BUT SOMEBODY TO WORK WITH CDOT, TO WORK WITH THE CITY, WORK WITH THE COUNTY, WORK WITH THE DEVELOPERS, TO EDUCATE THEM ON MULITMODAL USE BECAUSE IT REALLY IS THE FUTURE.
Another big suggestion that came from the summit was education. A recommendation was made to have information about cycling and cycling laws at the Department of Motor Vehicles when individuals come for registration or renewals. However, Justice says that motorists aren't the only ones who need to learn how to share the roads.
JUSTICE: THE LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS DOES THAT AS WELL. THEY TEACH RIDERS HOW TO RIDE SAFELY AND WITHIN THE LAW. SO IT'S NOT JUST FOCUED ON MOTORISTS AND TEACHING THEM WHAT BIKERS CAN DO, BICYCLISTS BUT ITS TEACHING THE CYLCISTS WHAT THEY NEED TO DO, WHAT LAWS THEY NEED TO FOLLOW AS WELL.
Mary Oswald with the task force also noted that the local bike shops in Durango have enhanced the community's economy.
MARY OSWALD: WE IMPROVE OUR CITY AND COUNTY IN ALL WAYS. WE ALREADY HAVE LOCAL BUSINESSES THAT PUT AN ESTIMATED 5 MILLION DOLLARS IN ANNUAL REVENUE INTO DURANGO AND LA PLATA COUNTY.
Other suggestions were to have consistent signage, stenciling and striping throughout the county for multimodal transportation and to have law enforcement be more stringent in these areas.
The next step for the proposed bike/pedestrian coordinator position will be for the task force to make a job description, which will be given to the county's human resources department. County Commissioners say budgeting and conversations with Durango City Councilors and staff need to be in place before a decision can be made.
