Growing, After Gas.
(2008-07-22)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: LaPlata County's Manager is calling on the local business community to help prepare for the day when gas is no longer king.
Shawn Nau's comments came Today (Tuesday) as he assessed his first three month's on the job during a Chamber of Commerce event.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: Citing a report predicting a continued decline in natural gas production and its impact on county government revenue,
Nau called on business leaders to start looking at what comes next to find ways to stay strong, and diversify the economy.
NAU: FRANKLY FOR ALL OF US WE HAVE TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF BUSINESS EVANGELISTS, TO TALK UP THE FACT THAT WE HAVE A GREAT COMMUNITY, AND THAT IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO OWN A BUSINESS, TO RUN A BUSINESS AND TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER WITHIN THAT COMMUNITY OVER TIME. OBVIOUSLY WE DON'T WANT UNFETTERED GROWTH, NOT INTERESTED N SMOKESTACK INDUSTRIES, OBVIOUSLY IT'S GOT TO BE CONSISTENT WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND OUR VALUE SYSTEM AS WELL.
Nau told the gathering he hasn't had any significant suprises since assuming his job, except perhaps for one thing.
NAU: I REALLY DID NOT FULLY APPRECIATE UNTIL I GOT HERE, THE EXTENT TO WHICH PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT IS A BLOOD SPORT.

From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
