Mancos Public Library Put on Hold
(2008-07-22)
(ksut) - 07.22.08.MancosLibraryUpdate

HOST LEAD: Construction of the new Mancos Public Library is going to be put on hold for now. But it shouldn't be too long before Mancos residents have a new place to read.

KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner reports.

SARAH; Almost two blocks away from the current Mancos Public Library sits an open field surrounded by residences, overgrown trees and the rushing Mancos River.
RIVER SOUND
Patsy Smith is the Director of the Mancos Public Library. She can't wait for construction of the new 7500 square foot library to hopefully begin sometime in August.
PATSY SMITH: YOU KNOW IT ALL BEGAN REALLY FOR OUR LIBRARY IN 1999 WE PASSED A MILL LEVY ELECTION TO GET MORE FUNDS FOR PROGRAMMING AND OPPERATIONAL NEEDS.
The project hasn't even broken ground yet. With the recent construction prices soaring, the funding for the new facility is just out of reach.
As we sit in the current 2200 square foot library packed with books cassettes and locals, Smith explains why the project is being put on hold.
SMITH: THE MAIN THING THAT'S HOLDING US UP RIGHT NOW IS FUNDING. JUST BECAUSE IT DID COME IN QUITE A BIT OVER BUDGET RIGHT NOW IT'S ABOUT A HALF MILLION DOLLARS OVER. THE ARCHITECT AND CONSTRUCTION COMPANY ARE WORKING AT TRYING TO DO SOME VALUE ENGINEERING.
The new LEED Design library will include a wider selection of books and a new technical area for computers and online usage.
The library now is so small that they have to find a place to facilitate their programs elsewhere in the community.
SMITH: ANOTHER THING FOR US IS THAT WE WANT TO HAVE OUR PROGRAMS IN HOUSE. AND NOW WE HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND IT JUST MAKES IT NOT AS MUCH OF A CONNECTION WITH THE LIBRARY
Programs like Little People Story Time are being held at the Mancos United Methodist fellowship hall and the Mancos Community Center because the library now doesn't have the space to hold them.
Smith and her staff are working on local fundraising along with their capitol campaign. People can either donate to the library directly or Smith says they can be a part of a fundraising effort called Books for Bricks.
SMITH: YOU CAN BUY BRICKS AND HAVE SOMETHING ENGRAVED ON IT. YOUR NAME OR QUOTE OR WHATEVER THAT WILL BE PUT ON THE NEW LIBRARY.
To make a donation or to learn more about the new library you can check out their website at mancos.lib.co.us.
