SW Colorado Road Work Picks Up, Asphalt Shortage Could Cause Problems
DURANGO, CO
(ksut) -
HOST LEAD: Road construction will be slowing traffic in Southwest Colorado for much of the rest of the summer.
Meanwhile, some projects may be delayed because of a shortage of asphalt.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.
VICTOR: Crews today start chip and sealing US 550 from Mile Marker 24, just north of Durango, to mile marker 38 near Rockwood.
The 1 million dollar project is expected to take until the first week of August to complete, and could result in some significant traffic delays on 550.
550 is also being chip and sealed starting this week from about 6 miles north of Ouray to Ridgway.
And US 550 resurfacing on Red Mountain Pass is continuing through later this month with significant delays possible.
That project, however, and several others, including resurfacing of US 160 from South Fork to Shaw Creek, could be delayed due to a national shortage of asphalt.
CDOT officials are analyzing the impact of the shortage and say it could delay as many as 34 projects, until next year or result in an extension in the time it takes to complete projects now underway.
The asphalt shortage is expected to be short term.
In addition, work getting underway on adding a fourth lane to highway 160 east of Durango is also expected to result in traffic delays.
