New Senior Center In Bayfield Breaks Ground
(2008-06-12)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: A groundbreaking ceremony in Bayfield today marks the beginning of a new senior center.

KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner has more.

SARAH: With only $50,000 in funding left to raise, the roughly one and a half million dollar senior center in Bayfield is slated to open by the beginning of the New Year.
Other than attending a few church groups, Bayfield seniors are currently gathering at the old middle school cafeteria for lunch on Friday's.
Shiela Casey is the Director of Senior Services for La Plata County. She says this center has been a long time coming.
SHEILA CASEY: THE SENIORS THAT BEEN TALKING ABOUT A SENIOR CENTER SINCE I'VE BEEN DIRECTOR AND THAT'S ALMOST 10 YEARS. UNFORTUNATELY A LOT OF THE FOLKS, THE ELDERLY FOLKS HAVE PASSED AWAY TO SEE THEIR DREAM COME TRUE BUT SOME OF THESE FOLKS ARE REALLY GOING TO SEE THEIR DREAM COME TO FRUITION AND THAT'S VERY EXCITING.
Casey isn't the only one who's elated about the project.

I hit the streets of Bayfield and asked some of the residents if they feel there's a need for a new senior center in town.
PUBLIC BYTES: IT'S WORTHWHILE HAVING IT, AND I THINK THERE'S PLENTY OF PEOPLE TO ACCOMMODATE IT.
OH YEAH DEFINITELY, I THINK SO.
IT'S A GOOD IDEA YUP, IT IS A GOOD IDEA.
Karen Severn is a volunteer at the Durango Senior Center and she says that Bayfield's current program needs some work.
KAREN SEVERN: THE ACCOMMODATIONS ARE NOT VERY, HOW WOULD YOU SAY IT, THEY DON'T REALLY DRAW YOU INTO IT. NOT LIKE THE DURANGO CENTER.
Severn also says that there has been an increase of elders in the community at the Durango Center.
SEVERN: I'VE SEEN OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS A HUGE INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO COME AND THE ACTIVITIES AND I'M SURE THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN OUT HERE IN BAYFIELD ONCE THEY'VE GOT THE CENTER UP AND A PLACE TO CALL THEIR OWN.
Casey said she hopes the new center will encourage elders from Vallecito and Forest Lakes to participate as well.
The 5,000 square foot facility will include a pool table, exercise and social programs and along with other events that Bayfield Parks and Recreation department will provide.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the center takes place today at 4:30 at 111 W. South Street in Bayfield.
