Pagosa Springs Hires Interim Town Manager
(2008-05-02)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Pagosa Springs Town Council has officially hired on an interim Town Manager after previous manager, Mark Garcia's immediate resignation was call for by council.

KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner reports.

ANGIE ATKINSON: MAYOR I MAKE A MOTION REGARDING TAMRA ALLEN'S COMPENSATION PACKAGE THAT SHE WILL BE IN THIS NEW POSITION AS INTERIM TOWN MANAGER.

SARAH: That's Pagosa Springs Town Council Member Angela Atkinson motioning to have Tamra Allen as interim Town Manager.
The council has requested that she remain interim manager for a maximum of six months or until a new Town manager is hired.
Foregoing Town Manager Mark Garcia's immediate resignation from the position was called for on April 21st.
The details behind Garcia's sudden removal have not been disclosed.
Although Allen who has worked for town in several capacities for the past six years and has been assistant town manager since mid-March says Garcia's departure was surprising to most.
TAMRA ALLEN: THE IMMEDIACY OF THE RESIGNATION WAS DEFINITELY A SHOCK TO THE TOWN. THE STAFF HAS REALLY STEPPED UP. I THINK THEY'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DO BUSINESS AS NORMAL. AND WE'RE EXCITED TO TAKE ON SOME NEW ADVENTURES HERE. WE'VE GOT A REALLY BUSY SCHEDULE THIS SUMMER WITH SOME CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS AND WE HOPE TO KEEP THOSE ALL IN LINE.
Allen has not decided at this time weather she will put her name in the hat for Town Manager.
After speaking with Garcia he says he's not quite ready to speak openly about the details of his resignation but did mention some of the challenges he's faced during his 5 years as town manager.
MARK GARCIA: GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. WE DEFINITELY SAW SOME UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH IN MANY AREAS INCLUDING VALUES JUST SHOT THROUGH THE ROOF. WE WERE KIND OF A SMALL AFFORDABLE LITTLE TOWN WHICH WAS REALLY NICE AND I WISH WE COULD GET THAT BACK BUT VARIOUS FORCES WERE WORKING AND WE BECAME ALMOST A DURANGO OVER NIGHT IN TERMS OF PRICE.
Allen says she looking forward to taking on those upcoming challenges in the next several months.
ALLEN: I'M EXCITED TO FULLFILL THE DUTY'S FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME WHICH THEY'VE ALLOWED ME TO DO SO.

Town Council took down several names of search committees that have been used by neighboring communities to assist in their search process.
Since the beginning of the year areas surrounding the Four Corners have seen new city and county managers. The city of Durango and most recently the city of Farmington have hired on new city managers. While Archuletta and La Plata counties are seeing new county managers.
More will be decided about the search process for town manager in Pagosa Springs and whether or not the town will send out requests for proposal at the next town council meeting on May 6th.
