(Music Open)
Durango Blues and folk artist Gigi Love wrote and performs the theme for a 7 episode series entitled The Powerhouse Kids."
Haz Said, Marketing and Communications manager for the Durango Discovery Museum project says the production is a collaboration among the museum's developers, the city of Durango's cable channel CitySpan 10, and Emmy award winning Exposure Productions of Durango, with a grant from the Preserve America Initiative.
SAID: THE PRESERVE AMERICA INITIATIVE GAVE US A GRANT AND PART OF THAT GRANT WAS TO CREATE A DOCUMENTARY OF THE POWERHOUSE, AND WE THOUGHT HOW CAN BE COMBINE THAT MANDATE TO PRESERVE THE HISTORY AND TELL THE STORY OF THE HISTORY OF THE POWERHOUSE WITH OUR FUTURE MISSION TO CREATE AN INTERACTIVE SCIENCE CENTER FOR ALL AGES.
The answer Said says was to create a live action kids show/documentary.
SAID: AND SEASON ONE OF "THE POWERHOUSE KIDS" OUR PROJECT, WILL TELL THE STORY OF A RAG TAG BUNCH OF DURANGO KIDS WHO TIRE OF WAITING FOR THE ADULTS TO OPEN THE POWERHOUSE AND SO THEY TAKE MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS, AND ALONG THE WAY THEY DISCOVER THEIR SECRET POWERS WITH THE HELP OF A SECRET VOICE FROM THE PAST THAT EMANATES FROM THE POWERHOUSE, AND THAT WAY WE TELL BOTH THE HISTORY AND A LITTLE BIT OF THE FUTURE OF THE POWERHOUSE IN THE FORM OF A KIDS SHOW THAT WILL BE SEVEN EPISODES IN SEASON ONE.
Dr. Science of NPR fame, will provide the "voice" of the powerhouse.
The casting call for other parts is at ten tomorrow morning.
Both children and adults are needed for both on camera and behind camera jobs.
SAID: OF COURSE WE'RE LOOKING FOR THE POWERHOUSE KIDS WHO WILL PROBABLY BE BETWEEN THE AGES OF TEN AND SIXTEEN, BUT NOT NECESSARILY. SO, KIDS WITH TALENTS OF ALL KINDS, ADULTS...WE NEED SOME ADULTS ACTORS AS WELL, OF COURSE SOME PEOPLE WITH TECHNICAL SKILL OR INTEREST IN HELPING IN A VIDEO PRODUCTION. WE'LL HAVE A BOARD UP THAT TALKS ABOUT ALL THE POSSIBLE PARTS AND ROLLS THAT PEOPLE CAN PLAY IN THE PRODUCTION, AND YOU CAN PICK SOMETHING THAT'S OF INTEREST TO YOU AND WE'LL HAVE A SHORT AUDITION.
Said says they need about 100 extra's for crowd scenes as well.
SAID: WE'RE PRETTY SURE THAT EVERYBODY THAT COMES OUT WILL GET A CHANCE TO BE ON SCREEN IF THEY'RE INTERESTED IN BEING ON SCREEN.
The episodes will average 3-4 minutes each and will be shown on City Span 10, You Tube on the internet, and will be submitted to some film festivals.
Plans call for "The Powerhouse Kids" to premier at the Discovery Museums gala in September.
Said hopes as the series catches on, especially over the interenet, they hope it will help raise funds for completing the powerhouse renovation into a children's museum.
If fundraising continues at its present pace, Said says the museum could be open in 2011.
