9Health Fair Comes to Southwestern Colorado
(2008-04-04)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Area residents that are un-insured or under insured will have a place to go to take responsibility for their health.

KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner reports.

SARAH: The 9 Health Fair is Colorado's largest non-profit health fair program that offers free and low-cost health awareness and educational screenings in hundreds of communities around Colorado according to their website.
The 9Health Fair will be screening in Bayfield, Cortez, Dove Creek, Durango, Ignacio, Mancos, Pagosa Springs and Silverton throughout April and in the first week of May.
The fair is expected to reach about 3500 people this year.
Karen Zink a nurse practitioner at Southwest Women's Health Associates and a volunteer medical coordinator of 9Health Fair for the past 30 years explains why the number of people expected to attend is so great.
KAREN ZINK: ALTHOUGH I DO THINK THERE IS A HEALTH INSURANCE PROBLEM, THE COST OF THE LAB WORK AT THE HEALTH FAIR, THE CHEMISTRY PANEL IS $30, BLOOD COUNT $15, AND A TEST KIT FOR COLON CANCER $20, AND A PSA FOR MEN I BELIEVE IS $25 ADDITIONAL. SO THE PRICES OF THE LABS ARE VERY RESONABLE.
The entire health fair is a volunteer based program and in 2007 9health fair saw 1600 in people in Durango alone.
The only requirement for individuals attending the health fair is that they must be 18 years of age or older.
The next 9health fair will be held in Pagosa Springs this Satrurday April 5 at Pagosa Springs High School from 7-noon. On April 12th they will be in Durango at Escalante Middle School and in Cortez at Southwest Memorial Hospital. The fair will be in Mancos and Bayfield on April 19th and in Silverton on May 3rd.
Further information about 9 Health Fair is available at their website 9healthfair.org and also at 9news.com
